Responsibility for educational oversight in Germany lies primarily with the states while the federal government only has a minor role. Optional kindergarten education is provided for all children between three and six years old, after which school attendance is compulsory for ten to thirteen years. Home-schooling is forbidden in Germany. All children enter in the same program, but at the age of 10, they go to one of the following three types of schools:
- Secondary General School (Hauptschule)
- Intermediate School (Realschule)
- Grammar School (Gymnasium)
